PHOENIX, Ariz. (July 29, 2004): With financing from a Small Business Administration (SBA) program encouraging small-business ownership by women and veterans, Marsha Goodman has become the majority owner and CEO of US Business Interiors. Goodman had been President of the seven-year old company that provides business furnishings and services to create optimal business environments since 1999.
Steve Thomas , a Marine Corp and Vietnam veteran, has been named President. Thomas also has taken a minority ownership position in the privately-held firm.
“We’ve had great success over the past seven years and our intent is to leverage the value and credibility the company has developed to grow revenues and margins by increasing penetration in the mid-market, healthcare and education markets,” Goodman said.
Magnet Capital, an Arizona-based Small Business Investment Corporation (SBIC), provided subordinated debt financing to assist in the purchase.
“We’ve seen strong recovery in the office design business and with the industry and strategic expertise that both Marsha and Steve bring to the table, the elements were in place for Magnet Capital to provide the subordinated debt financing for the purchase,” said Magnet Capital Principal Mike Shields.
US Business Interiors also recently completed a move to a new location on the ground floor at 3003 N. Central Ave., Suite 100.
“ US Business Interiors is a great example of the type of business, and Marsha and Steve reflect the level of business leadership within the organization, that creates strong partnerships and success potential for SBA programs,” said SBA Arizona District Director Robert J. Blaney. “Small businesses are critical to the growth and expansion of the U.S. economy and it is through programs like this that we achieve our goal to support business owners in their efforts in the marketplace.”
Prior to joining US Business Interiors, Goodman spent seven years with Steelcase, Inc. in Grand Rapids, Mich. as a Dealer Business Consultant and previously as Director of Government Sales. Goodman began her career in law after graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1980. She spent two years with a private law firm in Grand Rapids and then as in-house counsel for Keeler Brass Company, also in Grand Rapids.
Her transition to the contract furnishings industry began at Westinghouse Furniture Systems, a division of Knoll, Inc., where she was responsible for all contract negotiations from 1984 to 1990. She became Director, Contract Administration and Pricing at Knoll in June 1990, after Knoll acquired Westinghouse.
Goodman is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Arizona Women for Education and Employment, and she serves as Development Committee Co-Chair on the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Chapter of the AntiDefamation League. She also is on the board of Employers Against Domestic Violence.
Thomas came to US Business Interiors after nine years with Barclay Dean Interiors of Bellevue, Wash., most recently as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He also held positions as Director of Business Development with Barclay Dean Construction. Thomas’ career also includes experience as Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Barretts, a Steelcase dealership in Anchorage, Alaska.
He is a United States Marine Corp veteran and served in Vietnam from 1967-68.
Thomas holds a degree in Computer Science and participated in the University of Washington Executive Studies Program in contemporary leadership, negotiation skills, finance and marketing.
